As London Dry it has a clean and dry flavor. Juniper is predominant, but it is a perfectly balanced and harmonious gin. The lack of citrus makes it drier than other gins, but coriander gives it a lemon scent.

The story begins when Charles Tanqueray opened his distillery in the 1830s in Bloomsbury. The recipe used today dates back to 1838, but perhaps the original one is antecedent. It is a closely guarded secret, but it appears to contain only four botanicals. In 1898 Tanqueray joined Gordons & Co, moving the production to Camron Bridge, and took a leading role among the even more solid gin production. During the great raid of 1941 the London distillery was destroyed. Only one still was saved, still preserved in Scotland and amicably called "Old Tom". From 1986 the distillery passed into the hands of United Distillers (Diageo); the last member of the Tanqueray family to work in it was John Tanqueray, who retired in 1989. From 1920, during the years of prohibition in America, they continued to export gin from England illegally and it seems it was possible to find Tanqueray on the black market. . The company claims that Tanqueray was Frank Sinatra's favorite gin. It is said that the pineapple that appears on the bottle was a symbol of hospitality in the 19th century and having them at home was a sign of well-being and power, while the two axes are the symbol of the families that took part in the third crusade.

Gin is still produced in Camron Bridge (one of the largest distilleries in Europe) according to the ancient recipe, even still using the "one shot" method.
